Brass Technician
Joey began his career in 1993 (age 13) playing with Drum and Bugle Corps. Drum Corps served as a vehicle for musical and technical growth throughout his early years. He would later be named DCA Soprano Individual Champion in the 2000, 2001 & 2002 seasons. Joey has received the prestigious DCA Award for Best Showmanship (Vince Bruni trophy) in 2001 and Best soloist (Meg Russo award) in 2002 and again in 2004.
Before the age of eighteen, Joey performed with Rochester Philharmonic Youth Orchestra, the Roberts Wesleyan College Wind Ensemble and the New York State School Music Associations State conference winning several concerto competitions and capturing numerous achievement awards.
In 1999, Joey began studies at The Juilliard School at Lincoln Center in New York City. While at Juilliard, Wynton Marsalis took an interest in his musical ability and began teaching him privately for the next several years. Most often, Joey is seen playing the gold brush, Monette trumpet that was a gift from his mentor, Mr. Marsalis.
Coinciding with his studying at Juilliard, Joey was a member of the DeCappo Opera House, the Manhattan School of Music Preparatory division faculty and the highly noted Inter-School Orchestra (ISO) under the direction of the illustrious Maestro Jonathan Strasser where he still holds his faculty position.
Upon leaving Juilliard, Joey won several positions with highly noted groups in Boston such as The Berklee School of Music Tower of Power Ensemble, adjunct with the Boston Philharmonic and a member of Frank Boehm Creative Corporate Entertainment. It was also in Boston that Joe began studying pedagogy at the New England Conservatory with Charlie Schlueter, former principal trumpet of the Boston Symphony.
In 2005, he was asked to tour with jazz trumpet legend Maynard Ferguson and the Big Bop Nouveau, one of the worlds most unique and influential artists of our time.
Held in high regard as a teacher, clinician and arranger, Joey is currently in the studio recording his first album “Resonance” due to be released in the spring of 2008.
