FAQs
Thinking about joining our organization?? Here are some answer to questions you may have.
Q: How much time is required as a member of The Empire Statesmen?
A: Starting in May, the Empire Statesmen have something happening every weekend, but it has always been our policy that Family, School, and Work come first. Personal considerations and accommodations are made on an “as needed” basis. We do however, ask that you treat Summer Competition Weekends as mandatory. Full summer schedule are available here.
Q: How much money does it cost to be a member of The Empire Statesmen?
A: The Empire Statesmen has lowest membership dues of any top level competing drum corps in the country. Members pay $100 and are asked to volunteer at a few Bingo Games - which are always fun when groups of Statesmen work together.
Q: How far does the corps travel?
A: Over the last 26 years, the Empire Statesmen have traveled to places like England, Denmark, Sweden, Brazil, several Caribbean Islands, and Mexico… but this year’s schedule is entirely in the Northeastern US. We have more Upstate trips than ever. No trip is ever more than an 8 hour drive from Rochester, but the overwhelming majority of trips are only a few hours or less away.
Q: Is equipment provided?
A: Of course. Your membership dues include uniform, horn, drum, or color guard equipment and a variety of extras. You will however be asked to buy your own shoes and socks.
Q: Can my parents or other family members be involved as well?
A: Absolutely! The Empire Statesmen are world famous for our family-friendly atmosphere. Many parents and family members play vital roles in the operation of the corps all year round. But if your family just wants to watch, then they’ve picked a great team to support.
Q: Does the corps supply meals and transportation for the membership?
A: The Empire Statesmen will always have transportation available. For long trips we depart from Rochester and all are welcome to use our buses free of charge. Plus, we provide meals most weekends, but whenever there is an event at which the members will be responsible for their own meals, we will inform them well in advance.
Q: How old is the membership of The Empire Statesmen?
A: As an “All-Age” drum corps we have had members in their teens and we’ve had members in their 50’s. This year the average age is approximately early – 20’s with a large percentage of members high school and college age.
Q: What if I have a conflict with my school band / performing group?
A: School ALWAYS comes first with the Empire Statesmen. The competition season is during the summer on weekends. But during the school year, we fully expect that school age members fulfill their educational responsibilities.
Q: Where do the members of The Empire Statesmen come from?
A: In the past, we’ve had members from as far away as California, Canada, and even Europe. This year’s Empire Statesmen is predominately New York, Pennsylvania, Ohio, and Ontario, Canada. We do have a few people from farther away as well. There is certainly a very good chance that we have members from a town or school near you.
Q: Where do the members sleep during the course of a rehearsal weekend?
A:There will always be a place to sleep and shower, whether it’s a high school gym, or at he local YMCA. Accommodations are made well ahead of time and the Empire Statesmen are never unprepared to provide a safe and well supervisd environment for it’s members.
Q: What is the experience of the teachers
A: The Empire Statesmen have one of the best and most highly respected instructional staffs in the entire marching music community. We have music educators from local colleges and high schools, plus musicians with advanced degrees, and qualified professionals from every walk of life with countless years of championship level experience We also have quite possibly more World Drum Corps Hall of Fame members than any drum corps in the USA. Make sure to check the "Teachers" link.
